Model of a water-powered double stone saw
This functional double stone saw was reconstructed based on the findings on the Ammianos sarcophagus in Hierpolis / Pamukkale (Turkey, 2nd half of the 3rd year AD). Ammianos was obviously primarily interested in depicting the drive of his saw, which is why one of the two saws in the model was modified in order to demonstrate its functionality.
After all, the Ammianos relief is the world's first geared representation in which a rotational movement is transformed into a reciprocating movement (rotating movement → linear oscillating movement).
